About Kathy

Kathy Herring is a qualified and accredited psychotherapist specialising in trauma and attachment. With over 20 years of experience, she has supported adults, children and families to recover, rebuild and move forward after painful or distressing life experiences.

She provides a safe, supportive and confidential space where clients can explore thoughts, feelings and experiences that may be difficult to make sense of alone. Her aim is to help clients understand themselves more clearly, so they can grow from their experiences rather than feel weighed down by them.

Kathy draws on a wide range of therapeutic approaches and tailors her work to each individual. Her approach is collaborative, compassionate and grounded in evidence-based practice.

Kathy’s Approach

Kathy works collaboratively with clients to understand the beliefs, emotions and experiences that may be holding them back. Therapy begins with careful listening, compassion and curiosity, allowing clients to share their story at their own pace.

Together, Kathy and her clients:

  • Develop strategies to help them feel calmer, stronger and more grounded

  • Identify patterns and emotional responses linked to current difficulties

  • Explore the roots of distress in a safe and supported way

  • Work towards lasting emotional healing and resilience

Some difficulties, such as single-incident trauma or specific phobias, can improve within a relatively small number of sessions. Kathy also specialises in more complex trauma and early adverse life experiences, which require more time and care.

Clients do not need to fully understand their difficulties before starting therapy. Kathy works alongside them to make sense of their experiences and support meaningful change.

Therapies Offered

Kathy offers a range of therapeutic approaches, tailored to the needs of adults, children and families:

  • Supportive counselling

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) for adults and children

  • Play Therapy

  • Developmental Attachment Therapy

EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy recommended by NICE for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is also effective for anxiety, depression, phobias, addiction, chronic pain and recovery from abusive relationships.

EMDR helps clients process overwhelming experiences and release distress linked to past events. It works by helping the brain reprocess memories so they no longer trigger the same emotional intensity.

EMDR may help clients who feel:

  • Stuck or held back by past experiences

  • Overwhelmed, anxious or fearful

  • Emotionally numb or flat

  • Triggered by memories or reminders of past events

The aim of EMDR is to reduce emotional distress and help clients move forward with greater freedom and resilience.

Play Therapy

Children often express their thoughts and emotions through play rather than words. Play Therapy allows children to communicate and process their experiences in a natural and safe way.

Through therapeutic play, Kathy helps children:

  • Express feelings they may not be able to verbalise

  • Work through difficult experiences

  • Improve emotional wellbeing

  • Build confidence and resilience

Play Therapy supports children’s emotional development and helps them recover from distressing or challenging experiences.

Developmental Attachment Therapy

Early relationships play a vital role in a child’s emotional development. Disruptions to attachment—such as illness, separation, loss or parental difficulties—can impact emotional wellbeing and relationships.

Attachment-focused therapy supports both the child and parent or carer. Using guided play-based activities, Kathy helps strengthen emotional connection, rebuild trust and support healthy development.

This approach can help:

  • Improve parent-child relationships

  • Support emotional regulation

  • Address behavioural or emotional difficulties

  • Strengthen attachment and security
